HERITAGE
AUSTRALIAN HERITAGE COMMISSION (now the Australian Heritage Council)
The Australian Heritage Council is an independent body of heritage experts established through the Australian Heritage Council Act 2003. It replaces the Australian Heritage Commission as the Australian Government’s independent expert advisory body on heritage matters.
Many organisations are involved in heritage conservation. The Heritage Council of Victoria provides the highest level of legal protection for cultural heritage places and objects in Victoria. As an independent statutory authority, the Heritage Council of Victoria is the State’s main decision-making body on historic (non-Indigenous) cultural heritage issues.
i-Heritage is the City of Melbourne’s online database of heritage places.
The City of Melbourne has commissioned heritage studies since the early 1980s and now has an invaluable collection of heritage information for more than 8000 places within the municipality, which is available online.

PLACES OF WORSHIP
The Church of All Nations (CAN) was so named in the 1960s when it offered simultaneous translation of the Sunday service into 5 or 6 different languages, with interpreter booths in the balcony and headsets in every pew. But this church’s history in Carlton stretches back almost 150 years. In August 2007 we celebrated the 130th anniversary of our magnificent pipe organ, listed by Heritage Victoria.
Today, the Church of All Nations is a busy community hub every day of the week. It is host to the Carlton Senior Citizens’ Centre, the Indigenous Hospitality House and CAN Community Support.
Today St Jude’s is a diverse community of people, gathered from all over Melbourne – 100 different postcodes at last count. Over 500 of them meet in 6 different congregations each Sunday, which each try to cater for a different group: Families, couples and singles; youth; young workers; students; and residents of the nearby public housing estates.
